1,000+root canal treatments

Dr Hossam Hafez is our dentist with a special interest in endodontics. His work at Smileworks focuses on root canal treatment. With 12 years’ experience and more than 1,000 root canals behind him, he knows where the difficult bits are and where to spend the extra time.

He considers all root canals challenging to an extent. A familiar treatment still deserves his attention. Each tooth brings its own questions, and each patient has their own concerns.

His interest in this work led him to further study in endodontics at the University of Manchester. He completed his MSc in Clinical Dentistry (Endodontics) in 2022.

The question that matters

Can my tooth be saved?

It is the question at the centre of Hossam’s work. A tooth that hurts or has an infection deserves a careful assessment before a decision is made about its future.

Root canal treatment treats the damaged or infected tissue inside a tooth. It can allow a tooth to stay in place when it might otherwise need to be removed.

There is more to that decision than treating the canals. How much healthy tooth remains matters too. So does whether the tooth can be restored and used comfortably afterwards.

Not every damaged tooth needs root canal treatment. Not every tooth can be saved. The first step is understanding the problem and the options that make sense for your tooth.

Hossam’s focus is on giving you that understanding. You should know what is being recommended and why before deciding to go ahead.

Taking the time to do it properly.

“Taking your time during treatment doesn’t mean you lack experience.”

Hossam Hafez

He’s precise, fast and efficient. Ed and MJ describe him as someone who knows where to spend his time. For Hossam, taking extra time where it’s needed is part of good treatment. Many appointments take around an hour; some teeth need longer or more than one visit.

He sees careful treatment and experience as things that belong together. Experience helps him recognise where a tooth needs more attention. Taking that time is part of the work.

Organisation matters to him too. He wants treatment to run in a way that works well for the dental nurses supporting him. It is a team effort, and he values keeping that work orderly.

We’ll explain what your appointments involve and how much time is likely to be needed for your tooth.

Being listened to makes a difference.

You can tell him what’s worrying you.

He listens, too. Clear communication matters to him. If you’re worried about pain, getting numb or something that happened at another dentist, tell him. He wants to understand what you need.

For some people, the injection is the part they dread. For others, it is not knowing what will happen once treatment starts. Hossam pays attention to those concerns. Making the injection as comfortable as possible is something he specifically cares about.

Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area for root canal treatment. If you are uncomfortable or worried during your appointment, tell him. You can ask questions or ask for a pause.

You do not need to know the dental terminology. Explain it in your own words. A useful conversation starts with what you have noticed and how you feel about it.

The person behind the dentist.

Inside the Smileworks Liverpool practice.

MJ, our co-founder, calls him “the nicest man in dentistry”.

Outside dentistry, Hossam is a father with a young daughter. Tooth regeneration interests him; if he’d chosen another career, he says it would have been football.

The possibility of helping teeth repair themselves is an area he is interested in learning about. His work at Smileworks is focused on the practical task of looking after the tooth you have now.

Patience, empathy and clear communication matter to Hossam. Those are the same priorities that come through when he talks about his work: listen carefully, explain clearly and give treatment the time it needs.
