what are polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are a type of injectable biostimulator made from fragments of purified DNA, typically derived from salmon. These DNA chains, known as polynucleotides, have regenerative properties that stimulate the skin’s natural healing processes. When injected into the skin, they activate fibroblasts. These are the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin.

When these fibroblasts are activated, it improves skin structure, hydration, and elasticity over time. They are different from dermal fillers, which add volume to the skin. Polynucleotides encourage your body to rebuild and restore skin quality from within. This is similar to how skin boosters work, but with a deeper focus on skin repair and regeneration rather than just hydration.

The great thing about polynucleotides is they’re suitable for a wide range of skin concerns, from fine lines and wrinkles to acne scarring and crepey under-eyes. Polynucleotides offer a gradual but noticeable improvement in skin health. Because this injectable treatment works at a cellular level, results develop over several weeks and tend to look more natural and subtle than dermal fillers.

polynucleotide treatment cost uk

We understand that investing in your skin can get expensive. That's why we keep our polynucleotide treatments competitvely priced, especially in comparison to other aesthetic treatments. In the UK, dermal fillers and more intensive skin treatments like ablative laser skin resurfacing provide great results, but they don’t fit everyone’s budget.

With polynucleotides, you can get a firmer, renewed skin complexion for the significantly less than the price for a single area of dermal filler. This isn't a bad price for the transformative effects of polynucleotides!

FAQ

Do polynucleotides work?

Yes, we’ve seen firsthand how polynucleotides transform our patients' skin. They are clinically proven to stimulate skin regeneration, improve hydration, and support collagen production. Some of our patients even report visible improvements in skin texture and elasticity after just one treatment.

How long do polynucleotides take to work?

You’ll typically notice a glow to your skin immediately after treatment, but optimal results typically develop over 3-6 weeks. Your skin needs time to heal and allow the regeneration process to take place.

Is one session enough?

Many of our patients see a noticeable difference in their skin after one session. However, some may need 3-4 sessions for more lasting results. These appointments are typically spaced 2-3 weeks apart. To maintain your results after this point, we recommend maintenance appointments every 6 months.

How long do results last?

Results typically last 6-9 months. Though, this largely depends on your skin condition, age, and lifestyle. Some may find their results last longer than this time, while others see their results fade more quickly. Maintenance treatments can help sustain the effects.

Is polynucleotide treatment worth it?

In our opinion, yes, polynucleotides are well worth it, especially for those looking to improve their skin quality at a cellular level. If you struggle with fine lines, skin hydration, or dark, hollow under eyes, we can assure you that polynucleotides are a worthwhile investment in long-term skin health.

Are polynucleotides safe?

Yes, polynucleotides have an excellent safety profile. They’re derived from purified DNA fragments (usually from salmon) and are biocompatible and well-tolerated. There is minimal risk of adverse reactions. All of our injectors at Smileworks come from medical backgrounds, so you can rest assured you’ll be in safe, capable hands. You may experience some post-treatment redness, bruising, or swelling, but this is all completely normal and should subside within a day or two.

Who is the ideal candidate?

Polynucleotides are ideal for anyone experiencing signs of skin ageing, dehydration, dullness, or textural irregularities. They’re also a great option for patients who want natural-looking results without added volume.

Are polynucleotides better than Botox?

One isn’t better than the other. They both serve different purposes. Botox (though, at Smileworks we use Relfydess) is a toxin that relaxes the muscles to reduce dynamic wrinkles. Polynucleotide is an injectable that improves skin quality and elasticity over time. We find that many of our patients benefit from receiving both treatments, as Botox and polynucleotides work well in tandem.

Is polynucleotide a skin booster?

While polynucleotides and skin boosters are both injectables that aim to improve skin quality, they work in fundamentally different ways. Where skin boosters use hyaluronic acid to add moisture into the skin, polynucleotides use purified DNA fragments. The main goal of polynucleotides is repair and regenerate skin tissue on a cellular level. Polynucleotides are best for those with more advanced signs of ageing or skin damage.

Should I get polynucleotide under my eyes?

This is one of our patients’ favourite areas to get polynucleotides and is particularly effective in the under eyes. If you struggle with fine lines, crepey texture, or dark circles under your eyes, this is a great treatment to improve those concerns without any puffiness or volume-heavy effects that dermal fillers like tear trough filler can create.

Are polynucleotides painful?

Discomfort is extremely minimal. A fine needle or cannula is used, and numbing cream or local anesthetic is used beforehand. Most patients describe the treatment as tolerable with only slight pressure or stinging.

Thank you Kayleigh and Becca! During my appointment, the team were really attentive and talked me through each process (attachment removal, fixed retainer put on). They continued to check up on me during the appointment, give me great dental advice after the appointment, and checked that I was booked in again for a review!
